  •  Matt Risinger. Austin-based builder Matt Risinger has all sorts of awesome builds and remodeling projects on his YouTube channel. He discusses how building science is applied to the process, provides product reviews from some top builders in town as well as features Building With Matt - an informative show for anyone who wants to know more about what goes into their home or business!

 

  1. Construction Instruction. You know how technology is constantly changing? Well, just when we thought that YouTube was enough to keep up with our vices… this happened. From the team at IBS Orlando: a new app and channel for all your binge-watching needs!

  1. Corbett Lunsford. For those looking for home performance advice and insight, this book offers a wealth of knowledge. Corbett and his wife offer great tips on how you can make your house more energy efficient while also giving readers an idea about what it's like working with buildings all day long!, And as if that weren’t enough, tune into the Building Performance Podcast for more hands-on insight from Corbett.

  •  Journal of Light Construction. If you’re looking for a way to learn the industry's top secrets, check out our awesome compilation videos from some of today's professionals. And don't forget about our weekly newsletter delivered Sundays!


Building Codes & Practices

In order to stay up-to date with the latest building codes and best practices, be sure you are constantly checking these resources.

 

  • Building Science Podcast.  70 episodes and counting, and we can’t get it enough. Presented by Positive Energy, an engineering firm in Austin, the hosts are at the forefront of building technology, but also have a love of conservation and keeping things simple.

 

  • Avoiding Wet Walls.  The Sunday Update is one of our favorite email newsletters. But it's this article that every contractor should bookmark, especially if they work in a climate zone with high energy codes and moisture-prone surfaces such as bathroom walls or windowsills due to condensation from bathrooms at night when there’s no heat source available (or even sometimes during the day).

 

  • The American Society of Home Inspectors As a contractor, I've found that there are many posts on the internet about stucco. But this one by ASHI Past President David Tamny is especially insightful and well-written; it gives you new perspective as an industry professional.

 

  • Legal Ease. Ever wonder what a lawyer would think about your building project? Quality Built The lessons learned from analyzing more than 2,000 litigation cases and investigations have formed the basis for a knowledge database that is used to evaluate builder quality. This way you can minimize construction defects while building your dream home!

 

  •  Energycodes.gov. The Energy Codes website is a great resource for anyone who's interested in the current status of energy code adoption across all 50 states. You can find detailed information on each state’s progress, with links to helpful resources and contact details if you want more info!

  • And this: Code Watcher.us is where you go to find the latest and greatest in computer programming! We’ve got an expert staff that knows their stuff, so come on over if coding sounds like fun but not something for your resume - we may be able help out with that too :)

 

  •  BCDNetwork  is a great resource for learning about the latest energy codes, along with trends and proposed changes.

  •   Asbestos and Removal Guide a great resource for learning about what homeowners need to know with asbestos and the removal process 

  • The Institute for Market Transformation did a two-part series on “What To Expect from the 2015 IECC” here and here. This organization's mission is "promoting energy efficiency in buildings" which they have consistently published about over time as well!

  • The National Association of Home Builders has also compiled a list the "Critical 2015 Code Change Proposals" and their outcomes. The title should be more engaging, such as what's on your mind right now or how will this affect me?

 

  • Builder Online is the go-to source for new construction industry news and information. With coverage of everything from housing policy to sales, it's never been easier to keep in step with what makes your business thrive!
